Movie Review- Project X

Last night two of my buddies and I decided to go watch Project X. We all went in with different expectations. One of us expected it to be awesome, one of us expected it to be just another terrible movie with a great trailer, and one of us expected it to be hilarious.

We were all wrong.

Lets get it straight right off the bat. Project X is not an awesome movie, nor is it terrible or hilarious. Project X is best described as pure fun.

The movie is about two losers throwing a 17th birthday party for their other loser friend, Thomas. They decide to chronicle the events of the party by videotaping the whole thing. After about ten minutes of some so-so acting, story, and camera work, the party finally begins.

Here’s the thing about the high school these kids attend. All the girls are total knockouts. Also, their friends are hot, not one hot chick brought their ugly fat friend which, by the way, needs to be discussed on a separate blog, leave ‘em at home ladies.

I don’t want to spoil anything, but you pretty much already know what happens from the trailer. The party is wild; there are drugs and tits everywhere (the girls in this movie are enough for me to tell you to go see it). Everything that could be destroyed gets destroyed. These kids are all MacGyvers when it comes to getting sloshed. We’re talking about some really advanced potheads and alcoholics to figure out some of the ways they ingest their drug of choice.

The whole time girls are taking their clothes off the camera follows Thomas. He has to figure out if he wants to be a loser and make sure his house stays upright, or revel in the insanity and finally be kid everyone loves. What do you think he does? I mean seriously, have you seen the trailer?

I laughed a lot, but like I said, it’s not a funny movie. There are funny moments and certainly I laughed at the situation which was just so comically out of control (in a good way) but for those who think this is going to be on par with The Hangover and Old School, it’s not. It is however really entertaining. When the movie was over and everyone filed out of the theatre I was surprised to see nobody left the building. Everyone stayed to talk about it.

I think the reason this movie is as fun as it is, is because we all have that one high school party where things got out of control. This movie is a combination of ALL of those parties. Ever destroy your dad’s car? It’s in there. Ever rip off a drug dealer? It’s in there. Ever taser someone? It’s in there. Everyone can watch this movie and relate to it. Obviously none of us set our entire neighborhoods on fire (Oh yeah, spoiler alert, my bad) but we all got ourselves into some shit.

The only parts of this movie that you’ll remember are the perverted camera, the freshman security guards who absolutely steal the movie, and the amount of fun you had watching it. Don’t go in expecting to see an Oscar nominee but know that you’re going to have a blast. I’m going to give this movie two ratings.

5/10- for actual story

10/10- for entertainment value

Go see it.
